Computer hardware is one of the biggest landfill fillers and most use large amounts of energy. A relatively new notebook in town is winning all kinds of green stars.

There is a new laptop contender in town and the company is providing lightweight, thin, and eco-friendly computing machines to stores near you and online.

The ASUS company manufacturers a laptop that is only .75 inches deep and another that weighs only 3.46 pounds. And, the company has built green manufacturing, sustainability, green training, green service and marketing into its vision and mission.

Mini Mobile Computing

ASUS makes a product line- the Eee PC -that is packed full of components such as large screens and keyboards, 40 to 80 GB hard drives, 1GB of memory and a six hour battery but only weighs three to four pounds.

These small notebooks are truly about the size of a small notebook and are easy to carry.

Green Computers

The ASUS laptops are not just small but the company produces an award-winning green line of computers. ASUS's web site promotes its product lines as "Green ASUS: Eco-friendly Notebooks from Conception to End-of-life" and state it has "Four Green Home Runs". The company integrates green in four ways:

Green Design to sustain the life of the product by using components that are durable and easily replaceable. When the products do reach the end of life, they are designed for easy disassembly.

Green Procurement in phasing out hazardous or potentially hazardous substances and chemicals. The company asks its vendors to provide substances warranty letters and 3rd party tests reports.

Green Manufacturing by using less toxic materials in production and incorporating energy-saving components.

Green Service and Marketing by making all employees attend an environmental awareness training program - no easy task since the company has over eight thousand employees world-wide.

ASUS reported sales of $6.9 billion in 2007 and has won numerous awards for quality, eco, and service.

The computers use the Windows operating system and boast a fast boot-up and shut down and a long battery life (5 hours).

Green Product Line

The company manufacturers 50 different models qualified to carry the Energy Star green technology symbol. The award winning green models include the N series, N50, N80, N21, N10.

The N Series has been awarded the EuP (Energy-using Product) certification, the EU Flower certification and EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) Gold award. EPEAT uses the highest rated and most strict standards to green computing and green IT.

It is one of the fastest and most coveted green awards in the IT world. EPEAT evaluates electronic products to 51 different environmental criteria-23 mandatory and 28 optional . Products can receive three levels of awards, Bronze (meet 23 of the 51 criteria), Silver (meets all 23 and half of the optional criteria) and Gold (meets all of the 23 plus at least 75 percent of the optional criteria).

Green Computing

The mobile computing products offered by ASUS are where all of the laptop manufacturers need to go with their product lines - smaller, full-featured, powerful, and green.
