It would be a fair guess that many users who consider themselves in the market for an illuminated keyboard intend to use it... in the dark! As such, finding an illuminated keyboard that is stylish and comfortable yet very functional is important, and not all lighted keyboards are created equal. The Saitek Eclipse II Illuminated Keyboard does a quite adequate job by providing candy for the eyes while at the same time providing a gentle touch for the fingers.
Red and blue LED backlights hidden behind the laser etched keys on the Eclipse II allow users to easily see the letters whether in the daytime or in complete darkness. Changing between the 3 different LED backlighting colors on the Eclipse II is as easy as pressing a button. Users have a choice of red, blue, or a light purple (red + blue) color or the backlight can be turned off completely. Unlike some illuminated keyboards the Eclipe II has a rotary dial that can be used to change the intensity of the backlight. Thus, the keyboard can be adjusted to whatever level of brightness a user desires from bright hot purple to a subdued cool blue.
One Eclipse II computer keyboard that was tested had a slight problem with pressure sensitivity. It required far too much pressure, especially the M and P keys. A replacement unit did not have this problem, although in general the keys do seem to have slightly more resistance than one might like.
Another minor issue is that some users found that the included hard plastic wrist rest was a little uncomfortable and not wide enough for individuals with longer fingers. Neither of these should be a deal breaker however, as aside from those 2 issues the keyboard works very well and is excellent for those who like to type or play games in the dark.
For buyers in the market for an illuminated, backlit keyboard for their computer the Saitek Eclipse II will work well in almost every situation.
